Ham and homemade mashed potatoes

Ham with homemade mashed potatoes is a classic family dinner for 4, ready in 35 minutes, very easy, for €2.10 per serving. Warm slices of ham are paired with buttery, nutmeg scented mashed potatoes made with butter and milk. The trick is warming the ham over very low heat so it stays tender instead of toughening up.

Just like the old school cafeteria, warm slices of ham with creamy homemade mashed potatoes loaded with butter.

There's nothing fussy about this one, just smooth, buttery mashed potatoes and ham slices gently warmed in a skillet. A pinch of nutmeg quietly lifts the potatoes, while parsley and pickles add the freshness and tang that balance the richness. It's the kind of meal you can make on autopilot, and it still brings everyone to the table.

It's the weeknight dinner for when you want zero stress, but it's also the one kids and adults both ask for again. Mon Chou designed it for the nights when comfort matters more than fuss, with homemade mashed potatoes that taste nothing like the instant kind.

The step by step recipe

  1. Peel the potatoes, cut them into chunks, and drop them into cold salted water.

Start from cold water for even cooking.

  2. Cook until a knife slides in without resistance. 20 min

Drain well and let them steam dry for two minutes.

  3. Mash the potatoes with a potato masher along with the butter, hot milk, and nutmeg.

Add the milk gradually to control the texture.

  4. Warm the ham slices in a skillet with a knob of butter. 3 min

Don't sear them, they just need to warm through.

  5. Serve the ham with the mashed potatoes, parsley, and pickles.

The pickles bring the acidity that balances the richness of the potatoes.

Our tips to get it right

  • Pick a starchy potato like Yukon Gold, it mashes smoother and lighter than waxy varieties.
  • Warm the milk before stirring it in, cold milk makes the mash gluey fast.
  • Never leave the ham over high heat, even a few extra seconds dries it out and makes it tough.

The variations

  • Swap the butter for olive oil in the mash for a lighter, less creamy version.
  • For a vegetarian take, replace the ham with melted raclette cheese slices on top of the hot mash.
  • For picky kids in a hurry, blend the mash with a bit more milk until it's almost soup like, they tend to love it that way.

What to serve it with

  • A green salad with vinaigrette
  • A glass of sparkling apple cider
  • French style peas

Storage

The mashed potatoes keep for 2 days in the fridge in a sealed container. Reheat gently over low heat with a splash of milk to bring back the creaminess. The ham is best eaten the same day, it loses tenderness if reheated twice.

Questions about this dish

Can you make the mashed potatoes ahead of time?

Yes, you can make them a few hours ahead and reheat gently with a splash of milk. Avoid making them the day before, they taste best freshly mashed.

Can you freeze homemade mashed potatoes?

Mash made with butter and milk doesn't freeze well, it turns grainy once thawed. It's better to make it right before serving.

Which potatoes work best for mashing?

Starchy varieties like Yukon Gold or Russet give a smoother mash. New potatoes, which are firmer, tend to turn gluey instead.

Can you use a different type of ham?

You can use bone in ham or a less salty cured ham if you prefer. Either way, always warm it over low heat so it stays soft.
