Organizing the week’s family meals, the method that actually sticks
Everyone agrees that planning the week's meals is a good idea. Sticking with it for more than two weeks is another story. Here's a method that holds up to real life.
A well made meal plan means less shopping, less waste, and above all less mental load. The trap is wanting to plan everything. A good plan leaves room for the unexpected.
Plan for five nights, not seven
Keep two nights a week free. One for leftovers, one for the unexpected, pizza night, dinner at a friend’s, or the night nobody’s hungry. A plan that’s too tight always falls apart by Wednesday.
Start from everyone’s tastes
Write down once and for all what everyone loves, tolerates, and refuses. A plan with a dish a kid hates is a plan that’s going to go sideways. It’s the first thing Mon Chou asks you, so it never suggests what someone can’t stand.
Alternate between food families
To avoid boredom without making life complicated, rotate through a few broad categories.
- A pasta or rice night.
- A fish night.
- A poultry night.
- A vegetarian night, eggs, legumes, or a vegetable bake.
- A treat night, burgers, homemade pizza, crepes.
Cook once, eat twice
Deliberately plan extra for certain dishes. Monday’s roast chicken becomes Tuesday’s lunch wraps, Wednesday’s tomato sauce goes into Thursday’s lasagna. Leftovers become a choice, not a problem.
Sunday batch cooking, the reasonable version
No need to spend the whole afternoon in the kitchen. Ninety minutes is enough to prep the base for three nights, a sauce, a cooked grain, roasted vegetables. Come dinnertime, all that’s left is to assemble.
One single, shared shopping list
A plan only matters if it produces a clear shopping list, organized by aisle and shared with the household. Whoever passes by the store can handle it, no phone call needed.
Let it do it for you
Mon Chou builds the plan for a week, two weeks, or a month, whatever you like. It factors in everyone’s tastes, turns leftovers into meals, organizes the Sunday batch, and fills in the shopping list. You just give the go ahead.
