Homemade ham and mushroom pizza is the kind of meal that brings everyone to the table, with a dough that stays soft inside and crisp at the edges, a tomato sauce seasoned with oregano, and that classic ham and mushroom combo melting under the mozzarella. It tastes nothing like delivery pizza, you notice the difference from the first bite, especially in the texture of the crust.

It works well for a weekend when you have time to let the dough rise, or for a weeknight if you prepare the dough ahead of time. Kids love helping with the toppings, and everyone can build their own slice the way they like it. The green salad on the side adds freshness without making the meal too heavy.

The step by step recipe

  1. Mix the flour, yeast, salt, water and oil, knead for ten minutes and let the dough rise. 1 h

Knead for a long time, the dough becomes smooth and elastic.

  2. Slice the mushrooms and ham, drain the mozzarella and cut it into slices.

Dry the mozzarella well with paper towels, otherwise the pizza will turn soggy.

  3. Roll out the dough into four rounds on a floured baking sheet and spread with the tomato sauce seasoned with oregano.

Leave a one centimeter border so it puffs up while baking.

  4. Top with ham, mushrooms and mozzarella, then bake at 250°C. 12 min

Preheat the baking sheet well, the dough cooks better in direct contact with it.

  5. Serve right away with the dressed green salad.

A drizzle of raw olive oil on the pizza straight out of the oven is perfect.

Our tips to get it right

  • Use a hot baking sheet or a preheated pizza stone, the dough cooks faster and stays crisp underneath.
  • Do not overload the pizza with toppings, otherwise the center stays soggy and the dough does not cook through.
  • If your dough has not risen enough, give it another twenty minutes near a gentle heat source instead of baking it too soon.

The variations

  • Swap the cooked ham for prosciutto for a stronger flavor, adding it after baking so it stays tender.
  • For a vegetarian version, skip the ham and add roasted peppers or black olives instead.
  • For a quicker meal with kids, use store bought pizza dough with the same toppings, dinner is ready in twenty minutes.

What to serve it with

  • Dressed green salad
  • Sparkling water with lemon
  • Raw veggies as a starter

Storage

The pizza keeps for two days in the refrigerator in a sealed container. It freezes well, either baked or raw with toppings, and can go straight from the freezer into a hot oven. Reheat it in the oven rather than a pan, so the crust gets crisp again.

Questions about this dish

Can you make the dough ahead of time?

Yes, you can knead the dough the night before and let it rise in the fridge overnight. Take it out an hour before shaping so it comes back to room temperature.

Can you replace the active dry yeast with baking powder?

No, active dry yeast is essential for the dough to rise and become light. Baking powder would give a different, flatter texture, closer to a flatbread.

How do you keep the pizza from getting soggy?

Drain the mozzarella well on paper towels before placing it on the dough. Also avoid using too much tomato sauce, a thin layer is enough.

Can you bake all four pizzas at once?

It depends on your oven size, but two sheets at a time usually works. If needed, bake the pizzas in two batches to keep the cooking even.
